When people think of blue coloured stones; one which seldom comes to mind is Sodalite. I am fortunate that just within an hour drive north of our home, Apsley Acers, is the Princess Sodalite Mine. Not much going on up there as the mine has seen better days, however they do run a Rock Shop and often have a few nice chunks for sale. The meaning of Sodalite is “sodium stone”.

This relatively new stone was discovered in Greenland in 1806. Although relatively rare it did gain some notoriety in 1891 when vast deposits of fine material were discovered near Bancroft, Ontario, Canada. Thus, its other name Princess Blue evolved after Princess Margaret who, upon visiting this mine, chose Sodalite as an interior decoration stone for their Marlborough House in England.
Although very similar to Lazurite and Lapis Lazuli, Sodalite is a unique deep royal blue rather than ultramarine. Sodalite also rarely contains pyrite, a common inclusion in Lapis; instead it prefers inclusions of Calcite. Sodalite will not entice you with sparkle or shine. Its energy is quiet, calm, and deep as the midnight sky. This stone is one of the most grounding of all the blue stones, and has a natural affinity with the third eye, between and slightly above the eyebrows.

Sodalite helps with 5th chakra, throat and third-eye, located at the top of your throat, and centered in your spinal column behind the collarbone. The fifth chakra energetically controls the thyroid, parathyroid, shoulders, neck, arms, and hands. It is a wonderful stone to wear near the throat chakra for thyroid problems, sore throats and laryngitis.
Sodalite is often used by athletes, as it aids and prolongs physical endurance. It is also an excellent stone for healing relationships and ending arguments. Well suited for mediators, as it helps end dilemmas by creating a wider perspective. It is also said that Sodalite awakens the Third Eye, allowing for greater acknowledgment and usefulness of one's own intuition.
Last but not least Sodalite brings peace as it stops your “chattering mind” during meditation.
